Aging with Vitality Program
Adults ages 50 and older are the primary recipients of this program. Graceland Center for Purposeful Aging (GCPA) is activating change to enhance the lives of older adults by providing a space that fosters social interaction, mental well-being, and physical health for older adults. Aging with Vitality programs include fitness classes, arts and crafts, educational workshops, and recreational activities, all tailored to the needs of older adults. These activities keep participants physically active and foster cognitive engagement, reducing the risks of isolation and depression. GCPA serves as a supportive hub where individuals build connections, share experiences, and gain emotional support, combating loneliness. Health screenings, financial advice, and social service resources address practical needs. GCPA has demonstrated an incredible difference in the lives of older adults by promoting a higher quality of life, helping older adults to age well in place, remain independent, engaged, and form healthy connections with their community.
Youth Program Remodel
The Youth Program facilitated by NHA provides a safe, nurturing environment to at-risk youth in the Peoria community. As the needs of the community have changed with time, NHA has adapted youth programming to meet the expectations of families and children through responsive and culturally-appropriate academic, social-emotional, behavioral, and life-skills curricula. In keeping pace with this legacy, the current proposal will support NHA in remodeling its learning spaces, acknowledging the changing societal landscape in an effort to prepare at-risk youth for lifetime success.
By investing in the youth through updating the spaces utilized on a daily basis to include a full life-skills kitchen, a multidimensional sensory space, and a more age- and culturally-appropriate classroom setting in which students can engage in academic and enrichment activities, NHA will be able to continue to provide the vitally important youth programming that has positively impacted so many young people in Central Illinois.
Park for All: Staying on Track
Wildlife Prairie Park (WPP) attracts a diverse range of visitors, from residents to tourists from across the state and beyond. In 2023, over 110,000 visitors from 45 states, one US territory, and 10 countries flocked to the Park to experience its unique blend of native wildlife exhibits and recreational activities.
The current Park for All initiative is focused on improving accessibility so every visitor feels welcome. WPP’s nostalgic train provides a scenic journey through expansive grounds and habitats. Whether for leisurely sightseeing or educational tours, the train is a delightful way to explore the Park while learning about its natural and cultural history. The Park for All: Staying On Track project will replace the 650 feet of North Loop of train track and improve the accessibility of the train for visitors with disabilities with the installation of an ADA accessible lift and other accessibility improvements at the Pioneer Train Station.
New Truck for Food Rescue & Distribution
Midwest Food Bank (MFB) provides food to nonprofits at no cost that in turn, distribute it to the food insecure. MFB’s core Food for Nonprofits Program operates through relationships forged with generous food manufacturers, distributors, grocers and farmers who donate their oversupply of food. Rescuing food with trucks operated by volunteer drivers is a key component of our operational efficiency. As such, it is vital to our sustainability that MFB has trucks that are in good working order, safe for our volunteers to operate and cost-effective to maintain. MFB is seeking a grant to replace an aging, unsafe and unreliable box truck to improve the efficiency and reliability of our food distribution operations, to enhance the safety and retention of our volunteers and to create new opportunities to rescue additional food, especially at a time when food insecurity is rising and the demand for our services increasing.

Learning Center and Lodge Completion
As we celebrate our twentieth season, we are planning for the future of our mission by undertaking a capital campaign to double our capacity to serve. Funds raised through your support of Camp Big Sky will, in part, be used to complete the lower level of the Learning Center and Lodge. Constructed in 2016, this fully accessible facility houses our Volunteer Training initiative, Life Skills Education Program and has hosted hundreds of overnight guests for extended stays. We will also upgrade our solar energy storage capacity and install an automatic backup generator to ensure reliable and consistent power for the Learning Center and Lodge. The completion of the Learning Center and Lodge will enable us to honor our core value of serving guests in a safe, efficient, and quality manner. We are maximizing opportunities for people with disabilities to experience the outdoors and live engaged, inclusive, productive, and meaningful lives.
Greater Academic Progress Youth Program
South Side Mission is proud to offer initiatives that address measurable needs in our community while employing innovative solutions. We are driven by a passionate staff who work alongside mentors and community leaders to create an environment where every child feels valued, supported, and inspired. With juvenile crime still a concern, we recognize the need for academic support, mentorship, and enrichment opportunities in a safe place for underserved youth. Our program is designed to address these needs head-on, providing resources and guidance to youth facing societal and educational challenges. Our program embraces innovative solutions that leverage technology, community partnerships, and evidence-based practices to enhance learning and expand opportunities for our students. From Social Emotional learning to interactive STEM activities and e-sports to hands-on projects in 3D design and hydroponics, we empower youth to explore their passions, cultivate critical skills, and embrace the joy of discovery in a safe environment.
A Home Away from Home on the Journey to Health
Children and adults who are fighting for their lives deserve a safe place to rest. At Family House, we provide a temporary home for patients and loved ones depending on local hospitals. For our guests – cancer patients, transplant recipients, and others – small things can be life-altering and even life-threatening. Viruses and bacteria can steal one’s chances for recovery. Yet often, patients do not have a home that is conducive to healing or in proximity to care. Therefore we are expanding our programming to best serve guests who are battling for their health. This requires partnerships with medical providers, professional learning for staff, and a home environment that promotes physical and mental health, especially for the immunocompromised. If awarded, grant funds will be used for professional development, replacement of carpet with hypoallergenic flooring, and hospital-grade antimicrobial paint that reduces illness. Family House keeps families together…and must also keep them safe.
CASA Volunteer Recruitment Campaign
Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) are a voice for children who have experienced abuse and neglect. In 2023, there were approximately 1,700 children involved with the juvenile abuse and neglect court in the Tenth Judicial Circuit. Through the work of our dedicated CASA volunteers, CASA served 442 children in 2023 providing critical advocacy. We need more CASAs! This proposal is to execute a robust CASA Volunteer Recruitment Campaign with the goal of recruiting 100 new CASA volunteers to serve 300+ new children.
Impact Austin's 2018 grant to CASA of Travis County yielded exceptional results, with 400 new CASAs. By partnering with Central States Marketing with a similar campaign, we have a wonderful opportunity to serve more children in our community. CASA volunteers ensure the health, safety, and well-being of children while breaking cycles of generational trauma and poverty. Every child deserves a chance. You can Change a Child's Story!

Art Inc: Children who participate in the arts are more likely to succeed in school and develop positive skills and behaviors. ART Inc will transform an abandoned school building in one of Peoria's most challenged neighborhoods into an economically and environmentally sustainable video production facility. The Production Studio will enable ART Inc to enhance and expand their Arts and STEM programming. It will introduce 150 youth annually to film, studio music, lighting, and sound production through fun and engaging activities. Truly accessible to all, it will be also be a place where local artists come together and create.
Individuals experiencing homelessness or other life-controlling circumstances engage in unique Work-Readiness Training as part of a holistic approach to poverty alleviation. It provides opportunities for Residential Program students to explore and utilize their gifts and abilities as they learn the fundamental values of work within a relational, asset-based approach, addressing their spiritual, emotional, physical and educational/employment needs. Expected outcomes are decreased levels and cost of homelessness and individuals moving from poverty to progress as valued and contributing members within our community.
The Greater Peoria Family YMCA and the Peoria Park District are joining together to serve the needs of Peoria's most underserved communities. This unique effort will provide quality programming in a mobile experience. We intend to engage children and families in outdoor recreation and fitness experiences designed to create a better understanding of health and wellness, while building stronger relationships with each other, and developing a deeper spirit for community. This collaboration will have a consistent presence from spring to fall in six different community parks, three in each community, targeting both the 61603 and 61605 zip codes.
SFFC addresses root causes of neglect and social isolation, by hosting vulnerable children and creating extended support for families. Many families face crisis such as unemployment, domestic violence, homelessness, substance misuse or illness striking child/parent. During crisis', parents struggle providing a safe environment for their children. Parental stress can result in child abuse/neglect. With SFFC, these situations can be averted. SFFC intervenes prior to crisis through a community of volunteers fueled with compassion to keep children safe. Parents voluntarily place their children in a safe environment, while other volunteers support the parent to restore stability to their lives.
